My Christmas Miracle

It was the last Tuesday before Christmas and I was standing among the cluttered isles of my local Walmart with my long list of last minute rememberances. The yellow legal pad list had been taken in and out of in my coat pocket so many times the paper was as limp as I felt. I was lost in this gigantic cavern, and even though I knew the store like the back of my hand, I was to the point in my mind where I wasn't even sure what I was looking for anymore. A bubble of a gift thought rose briefly in my consciousness as I looked upon a young store clerk neatly restacking a completely destroyed shelf. I stopped and watched her slow methodical movements married to her sad lifeless countenance which, by this time, mirrored the growing frustrations that were building within my over cluttered Christmas mind.
Remembering my mission, I approached her to ask for directions on finding my elusive gift. Silently smileless, she very politely directed me in the right direction and returned to her orderly restacking of the multicolored plastic boxes. I thanked her and continued on my way around the corner. I was halfway down the next isle when I heard a voice inside my mind speak loudly, "give the young woman the hundred dollar bill you have in your billfold." I stopped in my step and without any hesitation I opened my purse, retrieved the bill and returned to the sad young clerk who was still efficiently stacking the boxes. I walked up to her and smiled as I handed her the $100 saying, "Merry Christmas." She stared at me dumbfounded and then the sun rose high in the most beautiful smile I had ever seen and she said to me, "you don't know what you have done." In a flash, she reached out her arms, swooped me up in the most unconditionally loving hug I have ever experienced in my entire life and held me so tightly I could hardly breath. The hug continued on and on as she poured forth an amazing amount love into my beingness. When she finally set me down, I wished her a very Merry Christmas and floated toward the cashier like a drunken sailor as I left my smiling angel behind. I glided through the register checkout, paid for my purchases and left the store on a cloud of warm fresh baked sugar cookie love.
I sat in my car in utter silence in a daze of amazement as I watched the shoppers come and go. I knew they were talking and laughing and yelling at each other but I did not hear a word. All I could feel was this incredible energy running through the cells of my body and all I could think of is that "I wanted more of that feeling." I thanked God over and over as I ardently prayed, "God, I want more of this wonderful feeling. Guide me, just tell me what to do." A peaceful quiet settled around me as I continued to watch the shoppers file past me as if in a dream. Then I heard the same amazing voice directing me, "go to the bank and draw out 9 more $100 bills and pass them out before Christmas."
Early the next morning I headed to the bank, drew out nine crisp $100 bills, went to work and waited. I had a magical day. Everyone seemed to be smiling at me and I felt like I was glowing and my work flowed effortlessly. At the close of day, I was checking out my account with a young lady with whom I had worked with the past couple of years. As we wrapped up our business, she reached beneath the desk and brought forth a tiny delicately hand carved bear with a little card attached explaining the totem meaning of bear. What this sweet young woman didn't know was that "bear" was actually my totem animal and had been so for several years and the excitement at receiving this beautiful gift from the Universe through this young lady confirmed for me that something special was happening within me. We laughed over the synchonistry of all these events. The fact that this lovely young woman and her equally sweet new husband had gifted me moved deep into my heart and the voice spoke, "give her a $100." I reached unhesitatingly into my pocket, fetched a $100 bill out and handed it to her wishing her a very Merry Christmas. Her open loving amazed surprise created a dancing light show of energy in the room around us as her joy ignited a thousand firecrackers of love.
I returned home after work to meet with one of my best friends with whom I was going to go Christmas shopping. We decided to relax a few minutes before diving into the Christmas crazy mall show. I shared my Christmas story with him and in a quiet almost eager way, I watched his face begin to flush with excitement as he explained to me that he had a young woman on his staff with two small children who were not going to be able to have Christmas. He had wanted to help her but he had no funds to do so. I could tell he felt a deep sadness for her and I watched this knowledge etch a small grief around his eyes. The voice stirring gently commanded, "give her $300." As I pulled the bills from my purse and handed them to him, tears ran down his face and he said to me, "if I wasn't gay, I'd make love to you right now," we giggled.
The following afternoon was Christmas Eve. I had a gift to deliver to a dear friend and had been having trouble connecting up with her. Our schedules kept colliding and it was becoming difficult to carve out a time slot where we could spend a few moments together. She finally returned my call and said that all her appointments had suddenly cancelled and she was free. I arrived at her place flushed with excitement at the glorious Christmas relationship I was having with the Universe. If there was ever anyone who would truly understand what was happening with me, it would be her. We settled down with a cup of tea and I began to share the story of my Christmas journey with this Thing that was speaking to me in my mind and directing me to give all this money to people I didn't know. As I walked deeper into the journey she began to share with me a story about a mutual friend of ours who had no Christmas for her children. The voice spoke strongly within, "give her $200." I reached in my purse and pulled out the bills and handed them to my friend. Because the afternoon was drawing late and it was Christmas Eve she immediately called her friend and made arrangements for the cash to be picked up. The couple arrived quickly and came into the living room with electric amazement. As we jabbered in a synchonistric dance of joy, the husband began to share his part of the story that had begun two hours earlier in the day. They had been sitting and having lunch in their trailer when the garbage men came by to do their job. For some reason he could not quite explain, he got up, took a much needed $20 bill out of his billfold and walked outside and gave it to the garbage men wishing them a Merry Christmas. Returning to the trailer, he sat down at the table with his wife surprised at what he had done. She lovingly told him not to worry because it would return to him 10 times over and here he was now standing and receiving $200 cash in his hand a mere two hours later. Happiness danced a jig around us as the angels sang and clapped a holy version of the Christmas Joy.
I had $200 left and the day was drawing late. I had a few more groceries to buy so I headed back to Walmart and entered into a full blown blast of shopping frenzy. I threaded my way through a wall of wiggling people and went into the beauty salon. There were only two operators juggling heads of hair in various stages of creative completion. A handsome young woman left her station and came over to me and asked how she could help me. We laughed easily at the Christmas madness as we worked through the details of my purchase. As she handed me my bag and smiled a beautiful Christmas smile, the voice rose and spoke, "give her $100." I handed her the money, wishing her a very merry Christmas and watched as her gratefulness turned somersaults of ecstacy throughout the whole salon. I left the space exhilarated and thanking God for the best most wonderful Christmas gift I had ever received.
I had $100 left in my pocket and I began to wander throughout the store with my senses heightened. I glanced at all the passing faces asking, "is this the one?" Nothing stirred and I waited. I got in line with my purchases and began the slow snailed pace inching toward the checkout. I glanced to my right and watched a young couple with a new baby in the line next to mine. They looked so sweet and I felt a tug in my heart remembering my days as a young mother trying to be everything I felt my children needed and wanted for Christmas, but their line was moving faster than mine and before I could move they went out the door. I continued my inching forward motion until I was standing before a very tired looking young cashier who appeared to be struggling to pull from her depths a smile. As I listened to the rhythmic beats of the scanner as she ran my purchases through the register, I asked her how she was holding up. She looked at me thru red rimmed eyes so tired and told me that she had just come through the toughest two months of her life but she knew without a shadow of a doubt that somehow she was going to make it. She smiled a smile of hoped for joy and the voice stirred deep and spoke, "give her the last $100." As I handed her the $100 bill and wished her a very Merry Christmas I saw a picture in my mind of a person throwing a life preserver to someone who was floundering in troubled seas. As she reached for and grasped the ring, her spirit lifted a sincere thankfulness in the world around us and the celebration of a very Merry Christmas was upon us.
As I joyfully paid for my purchases, receiving her thanks, I exited the store, negotiated the littered parking lot and finally came to rest in the front seat of my car with a feeling that the journey had come full circle and had been completed. I laid my head back on the head rest and took a deep breath and as I slowly exhaled I heard the voice speak sweetly to me one last time, "and to you my dear, a very good night, Merry Christmas."
